Master of photography, Ara Güler, has an archive of two million photos that he keeps in the third floor of an apartment inherited from his father. Born in Istanbul in 1928, Güler worked in a number of branches of filmmaking in various studios. In 1950 he began working as a journalist for daily Yeni Istanbul.
A graduate of the Istanbul University Faculty of Economics, Güler also worked as the near eastern photojournalist for Time-Life, Paris-Match and Der Stern magazines. In 1953, Güler met Henri Cartier Bresson and joined the Paris Magnum Agency.
Selected as “one of the world’s top seven photographers” in 1961 by the British-based Photography Annual Anthology, Güler was also accepted as the only Turkish member of the American Society of Media Phot

5 Street Photography ClichesWhen I first sat down to craft my top 5 list of clichés found in street
photography I thought it was going to be a very quick exercise. I figured I would list 5 common photographs I usually see on groups on the internet and be done. Before I could even start crafting a list I needed to understand the definition of cliché.
Wikipedia defines it as:
"an expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel"
I quickly realized that a quick list of 5 types of photographs wouldn't suffice as in a couple months it could be obsolete. For instance, if you were to ask me a year ago I might have said black and white photographs but now street photography on the whole seems to be moving more towards colour street photographs.

I was born and still live in Auckland, New Zealand, though I spent years travelling and living abroad in the UK, Europe, Australia, Philippines and USA.
Last year I made a huge career change after decades of selling new houses to working as an Employment Broker helping to get the unemployed back into work – less than half the income for me but ten times the satisfaction.

Saul Leiter - Vertical and AbstractAs you know, I normally don't do (features) Journals.
The exception goes to those photographers that had some historical importance in the photography World, those that influence(d) me, those that I believe can move others like they moved me, humanitarian photographers, and that normally live in the "shadow" of the same old Features and references.
This one is not the case, because I'm talking about Saul Leiter.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, his father was a well known Talmud scholar and Saul studied to become a Rabbi. At age 23, he left theology school and moved to New York City to become an artist. He had developed an early interest in painting, like so many photographers. His mother gave him his first camera, a Detrola camera, when he was 12 years old.
He was soon taking black and white pictures with a 35 mm Leica, which he acquired by exchanging a few Eugene Smith (exceptional photographer from Life magazine, among others) prints for it. By 1948 he began to ex

Claims that the 70's were more interesting than the 80's, but in December 1984 bought a competitive camera, an AE-1 and a 50mm lens.
Started out in color film, but one year after he turned to b/w, because color was tricky to develop.

Roy DeCarava - Shooting HimselfRoy DeCarava was born in New York City in 1919. His family lived in many areas of New York City during DeCarava's youth, including Harlem. Engaging formal study in fine art painting from a young age, DeCarava began working as a professional illustrator and painter.
He took up photography as an aide to his artwork. Increasingly, he was drawn to photography full time by "the directness of the medium," and soon found himself communicating the themes and ideas of his paintings photographically. In 1955, DeCarava opened a New York City art gallery and exhibition space, pioneering an effort to win recognition for photography as a fine art; the gallery remained open for over two years.
In 1952, DeCarava was the first black photographer to receive a Guggenheim grant. In 1996, the Museum of Modern Art put on a retrospective of his work. He was awarded a National Medal of Arts in 2006, the highest award given to artists by the United States Government.

Larry Towell is a Canadian photographer who joined Magnum Photos in 1988 and became a full Member in 1993.
From 2008 to 2011, Towell traveled to Afghanistan five times, documenting in both photographs and videos the various social issues that plague its citizens, from drug addiction and poverty to the prevalence of landmines, many of which still remain from the Soviet occupation of the country during the 1980s.
His work has included documentation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Mennonite migrant workers in Mexico, and a personal project on his family's farm in southern Ontario. He always works with traditional film, eschewing digital op

Irish photographer Andrew McConnell began his career as a press photographer covering the closing stages of 'The Troubles' in his homeland and the subsequent transition to peace. McConnell moved to work in Asia and then Africa, since 2007, to document the stories and issues from that continent. In the 2011 World Press Photo Contest McConnell won both the Portraits Stories and Arts and Entertainment singles categories for his images from Africa. His work has appeared in publications including National Geographic, Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, The Sunday Times Magazine and Vanity Fair (Italy)
