Is Photojournalism Fading Away ?
Without belittling the other branches of photography, good photojournalism is probably one of the most challenging of all the genres as one has the least control over subject matter, composition and light. What is photojournalism? Occasionally, a very unique photo, in which form is precise and rich enough and content has enough resonance, is sufficient in itself. But that's rarely the case. The elements of a subject that speak to us are often scattered and can't be captured in one photo; we don't have the right to force them together, and to stage them would be cheating...which brings us to the need for photojournalism. "The real truth of life is on the streets. Photograph the daily lives of people, and how they exist, and how they fight for space and time and pleasure." - Don McCullin In our contemporary society, one so over-inundated with imagery, it is easy to overlook the power of a single frame to change the way we look at the world, or rally disparate

Raymond Depardon: Grisaille Vision of Glasgow
In 1980 French Magnum photographer Raymond Depardon was commissioned by The Sunday Times Magazine to photograph Scotland’s largest city: Glasgow, on the River Clyde. The city has long been known for its architectural heritage – from its majestic Victorian squares to stern rows of tenements and brutal industrial giants – much of this building being the product of the city’s great Victorian-era wealth. However, in spite of this prosperous past and the city’s pivotal role in Britain’s industrial and cultural development, numerous areas of Glasgow were – at the time of Depardon’s visit – pover

Sent to us at STUKFS Powerful and emotional story from a firefighter who attended Grenfell Tower....
I'm not sure if this is something that I should vocalise or whether or not it should be shared with the world but as I sit at home thinking about the other night the Grenfell Tower I feel like people might want to know how the incident went from the point of view of a firefighter who was sent inside, while the tower burned all around us and how after years of cuts to the service I work for, how I feel about what we do and how the past few years have been for us.

TONY WALSH'S POEM TO MANCHESTER
This is the place
In the north-west of England. It’s ace, it’s the best
And the songs that we sing from the stands, from our bands
Set the whole planet shaking.
Our inventions are legends. There’s nowt we can’t make, and so we make brilliant music
We make brilliant bands
We make goals that make souls leap from seats in the stands
And we make things from steel
And we make things from cotton
And we make people laugh, take the mick summat rotten
And we make you at home
And we make you feel welcome and we make summat happen
And we can’t seem to help it
And if you’re
Female Photographers Matter Now More Than Ever by AfricanObserver, journal
Female Photographers Matter Now More Than Ever
This article drifted through my Twitter feed this evening. Given that one of my guiding-light influences is Margaret Bourke-White, it struck a chord.
I enjoy dA for the fact that (certainly in the circles I inhabit) work stands or falls by it's immediate quality. Who you are - pro or beginner, rich enough to run a 5D or shooting with a cellphone, two legged or wheel chair bound - these are secondary to 'can you make decent imagery'. May it long be so!
Since there are only 200 names on the list right now, I would hazard a guess there would be people who would benefit from being on it.
Why is it important to hire female photographers?

On December 7, 2016, my partner Harry and I were working near a Rally being held with some of the most progressive and outspoken people in USA politics today. We were lucky to be able to get there early enough for me to get up on a platform with the press to take some photos. I didn't even have to tell them who I was- they just let me up there!
So, here are some of the photos I took at the Rally with Bernie Sanders, who just ran for President in this year's election, and has been the Congressman from Vermont since 2007. Also present was the fantastic actor and civil rights activist Danny Glover, Rep. Keith Ellison (D- Minn.), Rep. Mark Pocan

Dear Reuters picture editor ...
Along with the rest of the internet, I have being watching the American presidential election process for the last months with some interest. Living in a country with a president dodging 784 corruption charges, trying to push through a R1 Trillion (roughly U$70 Billion) Russian nuclear deal, with a history of division and diversity, and surprising moments of reconciliation and hope, I felt - and feel - some empathy.
The reaction to the result was ... interesting.
This quote from Seth Stevenson in Slate seemed to touch on something important - why people 'missed' each other:
The press pack, collectively, looked nothing like the crowds at
How much data do we want to give away? by AfricanObserver, journal
How much data do we want to give away?
Part of my career was spent in the design of information systems - the precursor to what is called "big data". I saw how powerful properly structured data could be, from a marketing and crime fighting perspective. Data security was a legal requirement we had to meet. I also realised how invasive the data can be, and how the more it is aggregated, the less privacy one has. Also, one can be machine-allocated 'guilt by association' - think of some of the weirder ad's you get in your Twitter/ Facebook feed. That company used to fire (under a law that makes firing employees much harder than in the USA!) on average one employee a month for illegal

PhotojournalismWhen a picture is worth a thousand words
Photojournalism is something that is close to my heart, even though I don't practice it very much myself. It is a category of photography that doesn't get as much attention as fashion photography for instance. However, photojournalism is a very important part of our society, but also to the art and journalism world.
I recently learned that my grandfather was a photojournalist during the second world war and for some time after that. He documented some of the most gruesome scenes during the second world war in Holland and Germany, while trying to stay out of the hands o
